Iranian actress Marzieh Vafamehr: Punished for art and self-expression
Iranian actress Marzieh Vafamehr has been sentenced to 90 lashes and a year in jail for portraying a life that of many young Iranians seek and experience; seeking a more modern western-styled life amid the strict Islamic state.
The 2009 movie My Tehran for Sale was jointly funded by the South Australian Film Corporation and the Adelaide Film Festival.
An unfortunate example of art imitating life, Vafamehr portrays a actress in Tehran whose artistry and theater is banned by the authorities. Noted controversial scenes include Vafamehr, head shaven and appearing without a hijab head-dress.
